Introduction - Built Smart on Purpose

We've engineered a garage shelving system that holds 650 pounds on each 4-foot section.

It's strong, safe, endlessly adaptable, and always made in America. Our aerospace-grade aluminum assemblies provide the structure. The wood you choose becomes the working surface.

Top Tier Shelving requires 1.5-inch thick solid wood to complete installation. There are many ways to meet that requirement. We recommend 2x4 lumber, but any "two by..." material will work. If you have questions about your lumber choice, please Contact Us.

You may notice that wood is not included in the kit. That was an intentional decision by Top Tier Shelving - because no two garages are the same, and we refuse to design a system around shipping constraints instead of your needs.

Most "all-in-one" shelving systems ship weak and unattractive wire "shelves." Other ship low-grade melamine that is prone to warping, bubbling, and doesn't stand the test of time. By sourcing lumber locally, you get better material, a better fit, and full control over quality.

We don't do shortcuts. This is a design choice that gives you control over fit, finish, and quality.

Choosing your own lumber means:

  • A precision fit for your exact wall and stud layout
  • Hands-on quality control - you approve every board
  • We can keep our shipping free on most orders, redirecting your money into better wood and a premium finished product

The "Lumber Hunter" Checklist - Shop Like a Pro

Don't order your lumber online from one of the big box stores and don't let their loaders choose your boards for you. A few minutes of inspection makes all the difference.

Here are a few terms to keep in mind so that you can understand the lumber lingo.

  • Kiln-Dried (KD) Only.

Look for the label or stamp on the board indicating that it is Kiln Dried (KD). KD lumber is more stable and will not twist, shrink, or bleed sap after installation

  • The Sight-Line Test

Hold one end of the board at eye level and look down its length. If it has bows, twists, or bends - DON'T BUY IT.

  • Avoid the PITH

The center of the tree is the pith, and if you see the point around which all of the rings circle on the end grain - DON'T BUY IT.

  • Clear Lumber

When lumber yards or big box stores say that a board is "clear", they mean that it has no knots. Perfectly clear boards are not required by Top Tier Shelving, but it is good to avoid large knots or knots that go all the way through the board.

  • No.1 and No.2 Boards

Number 1 lumber is premium lumber. Lumber with a "No.1" assignment are better quality with fewer knots, defects, and twisting. This grade comes with a higher price.

Number 2 lumber is what you find at the big home improvements centers. It's not bad material, but this wood will have more visual defects. The money that you save will be earned in time spent sorting boards in the aisle.

Either number is satisfactory for the purposes of Top Tier Shelving. Number 1 is clearly a better choice, but Number 2 lumber can produce some very impressive results. A little care with a sander can give new life to Number 2 wood.

Honest Advice - What to Avoid

What Experience Has Taught Us...

Avoid pressure-treated and salt-treated lumber for Top Tier Shelving.

Designed for outdoor use, pressure-treated and salt-treated wood its saturated with moisture and chemicals. It works well outside, but indoors, it warps aggressively and often smells - skip it.

Avoid Cedar and Redwood.

Beautiful? Yes. Structurally ideal for Top Tier Shelving? No. These woods are soft and prone to denting or sagging under heavy loads over time.

Avoid buying lumber before the assemblies are installed.

Every garage is a little different. Stud spacing, wall flatness, and final assembly placement all affect the exact span your boards need to cover. Installing the Top Tier Shelving assemblies first lets you measure actual, real-world distances - not assumptions - so every cut fits cleanly.

Knowing the distances BEFORE buying the lumber allows you to plan your cuts so that there is as little waste as possible.

Avoid rushing your cuts and ignoring safety.

Accurate cuts and safe handling go hand-in-hand. We know that you are eager to get your garage organized - and we are right there with you. Spend a little extra time to safely and accurately cut your lumber.

A few extra minutes here pays off in performance and peace of mind.

PRO TIP: Use only 1.5-Inch-Thick Lumber

To achieve our rated 650-lb capacity per 4-ft section, your shelf platform must be at least 1.5 inches thick.

But, isn't a 2x4 two inches thick? No!

In lumber terms, this is called "nominal sizing". A standard "two by..." board - like a 2x4 or 2x6 - has an actual thickness of 1.5 inches.

That is ideal for Top Tier Shelving. Our assemblies are precision-engineered around this standard.

Stick to true 2x material and your shelf will perform exactly as designed.
