The Top Tier Lumber Guide: Choosing the Right Wood for Your Premium Shelf
Why selecting your own lumber is the ultimate "Pro-Move" for your garage.
Introduction - Built Smart on Purpose
We've engineered a garage shelving system that holds 650 pounds on each 4-foot section.
It's strong, safe, endlessly adaptable, and always made in America. Our aerospace-grade aluminum assemblies provide the structure. The wood you choose becomes the working surface.
Top Tier Shelving requires 1.5-inch thick solid wood to complete installation. There are many ways to meet that requirement. We recommend 2x4 lumber, but any "two by..." material will work. If you have questions about your lumber choice, please Contact Us.
You may notice that wood is not included in the kit. That was an intentional decision by Top Tier Shelving - because no two garages are the same, and we refuse to design a system around shipping constraints instead of your needs.
Most "all-in-one" shelving systems ship weak and unattractive wire "shelves." Other ship low-grade melamine that is prone to warping, bubbling, and doesn't stand the test of time. By sourcing lumber locally, you get better material, a better fit, and full control over quality.
We don't do shortcuts. This is a design choice that gives you control over fit, finish, and quality.
Choosing your own lumber means:
- A precision fit for your exact wall and stud layout
- Hands-on quality control - you approve every board
- We can keep our shipping free on most orders, redirecting your money into better wood and a premium finished product
Three Boards Deep
Small 20-Inch Deep Kits
Perfect for narrow garages, workshop tools, and paint cans. Each section of SMALL shelving is THREE 2x4 boards deep. Even at this smaller depth, our assemblies maintain the full 650-lb capacity per 4-foot section.
*Small Corner Kits are also three boards deep and lumber needs are calculated in the same way.
Four Boards Deep
Medium 27-Inch Deep Kits
Precision-engineered to fit 27-gallon storage totes (like Costco / HDX). The MEDIUM shelf is FOUR 2x4 boards deep. It offers the ideal balance of deep storage capacity and a 650-lb heavy-duty rating.
*Medium Corner Kits are also four boards deep and lumber needs are calculated in the same way.
Five boards Deep
Large 34-Inch Deep Kits
Designed for the big stuff - oversized trunks, camping gear, and large storage totes. Because of the industry-leading storage volume, this kit requires FIVE 2x4 boards to create the shelving surface. This is the ultimate garage storage solution.
*Large Corner Kits are also five boards deep and lumber needs are calculated in the same way.
Wood Options to Match Your Style and Needs
-
The Easily-Accessible Standard
Spruce - Pine - Fir (SPF)
These are the dependable workhorses of residential construction. They're lightweight, easy to work with, and plenty strong when part of the Top Tier Shelving system. Available at your local home improvement store.
If you go this route, try to get the Douglas Fir. You'll know these boards by their red coloring.
Best for: General household storage, seasonal items, tote storage, and easy installation.
-
A high-Performance Upgrade
Southern Yellow Pine
If strength matters most, this is our top recommendation. Southern Yellow Pine is naturally denser and stiffer than other softwoods, delivering exceptional strength-to-weight performance. Available at lumber yards and specialty suppliers.
Best for: Heavy tools, dense storage, and maximum load confidence.
-
The Showroom Choice
Birch, Maple, Cherry, Oak, and Other Hardwoods
For garages that need the look of luxury and shelving is a showpiece, hardwoods bring furniture-grade looks and durability. This option is, by far, the most expensive path. The benefit is timeless style and furniture grade looks matched by incredible toughness.
Best for: High-End Luxury Garages, Aesthetic-First Builds, Shelving that Wows Anyone Who Sees Them
The "Lumber Hunter" Checklist - Shop Like a Pro
Don't order your lumber online from one of the big box stores and don't let their loaders choose your boards for you. A few minutes of inspection makes all the difference.
Here are a few terms to keep in mind so that you can understand the lumber lingo.
- Kiln-Dried (KD) Only.
Look for the label or stamp on the board indicating that it is Kiln Dried (KD). KD lumber is more stable and will not twist, shrink, or bleed sap after installation
- The Sight-Line Test
Hold one end of the board at eye level and look down its length. If it has bows, twists, or bends - DON'T BUY IT.
- Avoid the PITH
The center of the tree is the pith, and if you see the point around which all of the rings circle on the end grain - DON'T BUY IT.
- Clear Lumber
When lumber yards or big box stores say that a board is "clear", they mean that it has no knots. Perfectly clear boards are not required by Top Tier Shelving, but it is good to avoid large knots or knots that go all the way through the board.
- No.1 and No.2 Boards
Number 1 lumber is premium lumber. Lumber with a "No.1" assignment are better quality with fewer knots, defects, and twisting. This grade comes with a higher price.
Number 2 lumber is what you find at the big home improvements centers. It's not bad material, but this wood will have more visual defects. The money that you save will be earned in time spent sorting boards in the aisle.
Either number is satisfactory for the purposes of Top Tier Shelving. Number 1 is clearly a better choice, but Number 2 lumber can produce some very impressive results. A little care with a sander can give new life to Number 2 wood.
Honest Advice - What to Avoid
What Experience Has Taught Us...
Avoid pressure-treated and salt-treated lumber for Top Tier Shelving.
Designed for outdoor use, pressure-treated and salt-treated wood its saturated with moisture and chemicals. It works well outside, but indoors, it warps aggressively and often smells - skip it.
Avoid Cedar and Redwood.
Beautiful? Yes. Structurally ideal for Top Tier Shelving? No. These woods are soft and prone to denting or sagging under heavy loads over time.
Avoid buying lumber before the assemblies are installed.
Every garage is a little different. Stud spacing, wall flatness, and final assembly placement all affect the exact span your boards need to cover. Installing the Top Tier Shelving assemblies first lets you measure actual, real-world distances - not assumptions - so every cut fits cleanly.
Knowing the distances BEFORE buying the lumber allows you to plan your cuts so that there is as little waste as possible.
Avoid rushing your cuts and ignoring safety.
Accurate cuts and safe handling go hand-in-hand. We know that you are eager to get your garage organized - and we are right there with you. Spend a little extra time to safely and accurately cut your lumber.
A few extra minutes here pays off in performance and peace of mind.
Know Your Lumber.
The Workflow - Install Once, Measure Twice, Cut Once
-
Step 1: Install Top Tier Shelving Assemblies
Install the Top Tier Shelving assemblies into the studs or concrete following our easy instructions.
-
Step 2: Measure Each Section
Measure the actual distance between the installed assemblies and record that measurement.
-
Step 3: Plan Your Cuts for Maximum Efficiency
Look for complimentary cuts. For example, two boards that are 47-1/2 inches long can be cut from one 8-ft-long board. For sections that are longer, consider 10-ft-long lumber.
-
Step 4: Shop and Slide
Pick your lumber using the checklist above, cut them to length, and slide them in place. Use the included #8 screws to secure the lumber to your Top Tier Shelving assemblies. This workflow minimizes waste and guarantees a perfect fit.
PRO TIP: Use only 1.5-Inch-Thick Lumber
To achieve our rated 650-lb capacity per 4-ft section, your shelf platform must be at least 1.5 inches thick.
But, isn't a 2x4 two inches thick? No!
In lumber terms, this is called "nominal sizing". A standard "two by..." board - like a 2x4 or 2x6 - has an actual thickness of 1.5 inches.
That is ideal for Top Tier Shelving. Our assemblies are precision-engineered around this standard.
Stick to true 2x material and your shelf will perform exactly as designed.
