How to Choose the Right Depth of Top Tier Shelving for Your Garage
What Depth Should Your Garage Shelving Be? (Complete Guide)
When homeowners start planning their garage shelving, the first big question is simple: What depth should I choose?
At Top Tier Shelving, we currently offer three sizes: Large (34” deep), Medium (27” deep), and Small (20” deep). Every size is engineered to hold 650 pounds per 4-foot section, so you’re not sacrificing strength—only choosing how much space you want to use.
A new Compact (13” deep) shelf is also on the way for tight spaces. Check back for updates.
Every garage is different—and most already have the perfect solution waiting. If you’d rather skip the guesswork, our Top Tier Designers can create a custom layout for you with 3D drawings.
Start With Your Goals
Before choosing a shelf depth, decide what you want your garage to do:
- Park vehicles inside (no more scraping frost or unloading in the rain)
- Create a workshop
- Build a home gym
- Support a business or maximize storage
Here’s the tradeoff:
- Deeper shelves = more storage volume
- Shallower shelves = more open space and clearance
Before deciding, measure these three things:
- Vehicle height
- Ceiling height
- Clearance needed for movement
Quick guideline:
- 9'6"+ ceilings: Large shelf works well
- 8'–9'6" ceilings: Medium is the sweet spot
- Under 8': Small shelf keeps things comfortable
Large Garage Storage Shelf (34” Deep)
The Large shelf delivers maximum storage volume. It’s built for big totes, coolers, seasonal storage, and anything you want completely out of the way.

The key advantage: large totes fit perpendicular to the wall. That means significantly more usable storage compared to typical shelving systems.
- Best for: Maximum storage, large totes, seasonal items
- Ceiling height: 9'6" or higher
- Recommended tote: Sterilite 30-Gallon EZ Carry Storage Bin
Medium Garage Storage Shelf (27” Deep)
The Medium shelf is the most versatile option. It holds plenty of storage while keeping a lower profile in the garage.
It’s especially useful above garage doors, where space is limited. Even with tight clearance, it still allows totes to be stored efficiently.

If you don’t need maximum capacity but still want serious storage, this is the balance point.
- Best for: Standard totes, general storage, balanced layouts
- Ceiling height: 8' to 9'6"
- Recommended tote: HDX 27-gallon Tough Storage Tote (Black and Yellow) -or- the Milk Crates Direct XL Attached Lid Tote
Small Garage Storage Shelf (20” Deep)
The Small shelf is built for lower ceilings and easy-access storage. It’s ideal for areas that aren’t overhead.
One of the best uses is under the garage door rail—a space most garages waste. It becomes perfect for everyday items like fluids, tools, and supplies.

You can also store larger totes parallel to the wall when needed.
- Best for: Frequently used items, low-clearance areas
- Ceiling height: Under 8' or lower wall sections
- Recommended tote: 6-Gallon Rectangular Milk Crate
Budget Considerations
Here’s the honest truth: deeper shelves use more material, so they cost more.
But every size is built the same way—same strength, same materials, same lifetime warranty. Choosing a smaller depth doesn’t mean settling for less quality.
You’re not buying a wire rack or imported system. You’re getting a smart, American-made shelving system built to last.
Coming Soon: Compact Shelf (13” Deep)
We’ve completed testing on a new 13-inch Compact Shelf, designed for tight areas like above doors, windows, and narrow wall sections.
